Hi Lovebirds,

This week for the LoveRotica Book Challenge, I chose the sub-genre Friends to Lovers. I read Lesson That Love Taught by G. L. Tomas.

Here’s what I think:

What do you think of the standard high school super star quarterback, turned war hero? The man, right?

That’s what the everyone in his home town assumed about Kit, aka, Lucky, all except one person. It was true, before serving his country Kit was the oversexed popular athlete womanizer who ruled the small town of Wheelwright, Kentucky. Once he had a chance to leave town and mature, he found he wanted more out of life. The only problem with returning home was that everyone expected him to be the same as he was in school.

Kit’s entire life had changed. His mother’s health had declined due to MS and being her only child, he was compelled to care for her. What few people knew was that he needed care too. Physically he was a fine specimen, standing over 6 feet tall with red hair and mesmerizing green eyes and a firm athletic body. Below the surface, he was riddled with guilt and horrible memories of war. His goals when he returned home:

“To be a better son
To be worthy enough to have someone love me”

Enter Beck! She was a sweet girl dealing with the loss of her mother and past demons that reared their ugly heads from time to time. She went to high school with Kit, but was the smart type so he did not remember her, but she definitely remembered him. They meet at a BBQ his first week home and became inseparable! Both are hot for each other, but Beck wants to remain just friends for now. She’s afraid of his past reputation of love ’em and leave ’em.

Left up to Kit, he would have taken her to bed the first night, but he welcomed the challenge and to his credit had the patience of a saint. He hounded her for months just to get a real date. They spent every free second they had with each other, but he wanted a date so he could slide out of the friend zone and in between her legs.

He finally got his chance after winning a bet with Beck, only to have things fall apart just as he was about to be satisfied. Close, but no cigar. They eventually get it together and sparks fly all over that bedroom. I still don’t know what she was waiting for. Yes, she had something traumatic happen to her during college that forced her to drop out, but she had had sex since. It was insinuated that she was sexually assaulted, but we never really find out for sure.

This was a really good story and I loved the characters in this book. It would have garnered a 4 or 4.5 star rating, but I had a tough time overlooking the many editorial issues throughout the entire book. It made for an irritating read and I had to take off points. It got better toward the end, but they were still there. If the author had invested in a proofreader this book would be a favorite. Unfortunately I had to give this book only 3 kisses.
