Welcome to another edition of Purple Night Lights, a place to spotlight writers of erotica. We will have intimate conversations about sex, love and writing about it. Today our guest is A.N.Johnson, author of upcoming novel “Enamored by Design”. Let’s do this.
LL: How did you get into writing erotic tales?
ANJ: Reading them. Simple, right? Well, it’s how I got into writing them. I enjoyed being able to immerse myself into a different world and read about others drama. It wasn’t until someone suggested I write a book, that I actually considered it. One day I sat down and began to write and well, here I am.
LL: Do you put a little of yourself in your characters?
ANJ: I do and a little of my husband too. All I can say is I married him for a reason.
LL: How do you do your research?
ANJ: My research comes from google when it comes to the ‘Design’ aspect of my book. As far as the erotic parts, some are from experience but majority is from my imagination, because I don’t want too much of my bedroom in the book.
LL: Tell us about “Enamored by Design” and who or what inspired you to write it?
ANJ: Enamored by Design is told from both of the main characters perspective, and is a story of how two people who work together shouldn’t want each other, but cannot resist the pull the other has on them. It’s about how their love of ‘Design’, as well as, the consequences of that love change them. The book does end with a cliff hanger because it is the first book in my Design Series.
LL: Since this is your first book, did you have any preconceived notions about erotica before deciding to write in this genre?
ANJ: Yes. I thought Erotica books and Erotic Romance books were one in the same. It was about sex, sex, and more sex, but then I learned the difference. I have read the Erotica books where sex was the whole point of the book, and I have read Erotic Romance were there was sex, but also a plot. I fell in love with Erotic Romance and decided that is what my book will be, a great story with sexy scenes.
LL: Who is the one writer that has influenced you the most in the genre and what is your favorite work by them?
ANJ: I don’t have one writer, I have two. E. L. James’ ‘50 Shades Trilogy’ and Sylvia Day’s ‘Crossfire Series’, I think have influenced me the most. I’m not a fan of BDSM and had some trouble with James first book, but I felt it got better in book 2 and 3. Both stories are about Billionaire Alpha Males who found that one woman they cannot live without. I am a lover of love, and found Billionaire Alpha Males to be a weakness of mine.
LL: What is your take on how many sex scenes to include in a novel? Can there be too many?
ANJ: So, I don’t think there is too many sex scenes in a story if they fit. If it flows with the characters and who they are, I say let them get it on; whenever, wherever, and however they like.
LL: What is your ultimate goal for your writing?
ANJ: My ultimate goal for my writing is to give people an escape, to entertain them, and have them fall in love with the story just as I have. Honestly, I get so much joy from writing, it doesn’t matter if I only ever get a small fan base. I know my passion for writing shows through my work because I am not doing it to be famous. I am doing it because I love it.
LL: What is your favorite sex position to write about in your novels?
ANJ: Missionary because I like a man in charge, but I make sure to add other positions to provide more insight to the characters.
LL: Are you a fan of toys?
ANJ: I am more of a vanilla type of woman who is open to a few things, but I can’t honestly say I am a fan.
LL: What is your favorite sub-genre of erotica to read?
ANJ: Vanilla, Erotic Romance, Suspense. I like stories that are sexy and thrilling at the same time.
LL: When does the kink go too far in your opinion?
ANJ: Anything associated with pain or being forced.
LL: Describe your writing process?
ANJ: Whenever I get an idea, I talk it over with my “brainstorming buddy” and write it down, then I write ideas on how I want the book to end. Next, I try to do an outline of my book. I say try because sometimes the outline will change once I am actually writing. I usually see the story in my head as I write so, how I initially may have wanted the story to go may change when my characters do something else to take the story a different way. I sound crazy I know, but I get so immersed into my story, I sometimes speak about my characters as if they are real.
LL: What’s next on the agenda for you?
ANJ: The next thing for me is releasing my book, Enamored by Design, in February 2018. I have already begun my outline for the second book in The Design Series and plan to start writing it within the next few weeks.
LL: Have you ever been so turned on by a scene you are writing that you needed to stop writing to take care of business?
ANJ: Lol. No, but whenever I am writing one of those scenes, I can never stop in the middle. I have to let them finish, it’s cruel of me not to.
